Another perfectly done casting from JL
I've got the red one on the right from CG R-18
Cobra says it's the only one that's wale-tailless.
Looking foward to Russ' BWF.
Thanks Wyatt, Beautiful photo!

Thanks Wyatt, you made my day.
This is one casting that I was extremely pleased that PM made.
It is a beauty.
And incredible detail on it too!
Just take a look at the rear of the casting. You will notice why I say this.
And did you know that the rear hood (bonnet) opens on it to show off the air cooled engine.
Another nice touch.
This is the best version to view because of its colour to take a very close look at all the fine detail on the casting. And it was the first release of the casting in Classic Gold 2 release 17.

And this is my favourite colour variation because of depth of the colour and the paint hue.

This was a refugee from the stillborn Porsche series of 2000 or 2001. A series of Porsches (914, 944 etc) was to follow after British Invasion, but after it tanked, the company was scared off foreign cars for a couple of years. (Somehow the notion that the BI models were oversized and ill-proportioned escaped everyone there--or else they didn't want to talk about it.) It took the VWs to get the company hip to the notion that non-American cars were OK in the JL oeuvre. Then Import Heat nearly killed the notion again. By that time the company was changing hands and I was gone.

Early on I identified new castings as a way to get interest in various lines, and this (and the 59 Cadillac shelved for American Chrome), both of which had already been mocked up, were sent to China to tool. They ended up as the first new tools in Classic Gold, I think ever. And we got new cars in the line in 6 months rather than the 9 to 12 or more that we usually have to wait (it's more than the physical work, it's approvals from the OEs and more that take time). I figured it early on as a Primedia/Motor Trend car, which (along with larger-than-cult appeal) was part of the reason I went with it rather than some of the other models available.

I now have photos of a factory blue '79 930 Turbo with blue leather, that appeared on the cover of Hemmings Sports and Exotics about a year ago. Was surprised it made it on the cover, but blue was a rare color and, should photocards continue, would make a lovely model.

Also forgot to mention, legal was flipping out when we were using Cragar hard wheels doubling as Fuchs alloys ... they were afraid Cragar would find out and demand their percentage. They were torn whether to include their name on packaging, etc. I think it was the red one with the wing that had them. (Hey, paint the centers black and it's hard to tell.) But as you can see from these photos, painted as they are you'd be hard-pressed to tell that they were Cragars! Later hard-wheel cars like the maroon one had the TU-1 wheels to help the legal dept sleep at night.

WOW! I like the pic Wyatt, but the info included was great!!!! First off I never opened a Porsche there for I never knew the "rear hood (bonnet) opens". Thank's for that bit of info Accobra64 thumbsup.gif . A big beerchug.gif goes out to Mr Koch for his insight into the history of this casting. I'm glad to say I have a couple(CG2 17 & 28) in my collection.

Also if you would like to see the Mock-ups of the Porsche 944 and 914. Head over to Lightninglane.com and look for "12/16/04 Here's a rare glimpse at a few Porsches that never made it to production, also great..... Pictures". thumbsup.gif LL has some great pic's of what could of been.

As always, LOVE THE PIC. Your da' man Wyatt...

I have to find that red one...

Did not know the hood (trunk ?) opened, headed off to find mine...

LOVE the back story, Jeff. This just makes it so much more fun....

Just another reason why I enjoy JL Talk!
RACECAR spelled backwards is still RACECAR!

Rear "Turbo" spoiler hood open.
This is also known as the "whale tail" Porsche.

IPB Image

A picture with the "whale tail" in the open postion for exposure to that air cooled engine.
A very nice touch by JL on this particular casting.
I love the colour of this casting.

Cheers. Cobra
