wave.gif Wyatt, thanks for the pics, I have been seeing some 1:1 El Camino
running around on the streets of my town lately. I only have 1 in my
collection, but if I find more I will be adding them thumbsup.gif

Great pic! These were out before I became a JL convert, but I sure wouldn't mind some of the cool chrome ones that were issued! Oh, and did I say thanks for the POTW!!

Wyatt, that casting is truly an oldie right out of the deepest corners of the Playing Mantis vault.
By today's standards that casting is very primitive.
But consider when it was released and what was available on the market and it did look pretty good.
That casting with its initial release has to be atleast 14 years old.
I thought that it came out in 1994 but I am sure that Wyatt is right when he stated 1993.
Wow, that is an OLD JL casting by all standards.
Would most JL collectors buy it today? Probably not.
JL collectors of today have been spoiled by many if not most of the castings that have been released since about 1999.

Here is another Chevrolet El Camino that has had its day in the sun.
I do remember how excited I was when I first got one of these castings in my hands.
Boy, when I think about it; that was a long time ago.

IPB Image
This may be the best version of this casting.

Wyatt, thanks for bringing back a part of the Johnny Lightning history from Playing Mantis.
If it wasn't for "The Picture Of The Week", many of these castings would never be seen or discussed.
And we shouldn't forget to thank Tom Lowe for staring it all in the first place.

Cheers. Cobra

I was just as excited as you were about the new casting of the El Camino Cobra.

It can't compare with the detail of the new JL cars either.

The first JL El Camino looks a little like a '70 Ranchero. eek.gif

The '71 El Camino that Cobra is showing could be an excellent casting with some tweaking. Reduce the tire size, fill in the wheel wells, smooth out the chassis and VOILA!

The 1965 Chevrolet El Camino casting #601
This is one of the first versions of this casting that I added to my collection.

IPB Image
1971 Chevrolet El Camino casting #373
This was another pretty decent version of this casting.
A nice set of wheels on it.

IPB Image
The original El Camino Custom casting #101.
Check out the wheels!
I liked these particular wheels for a long time.
And no I don't have this particular casting, just in case anyone asks (James).

If you look up from bottom to top you can see the improved detail and realism in the different castings.

I also don't have this casting Cobra.

Funny, but the wheels look like they came from a Matchbox car.

Stutz, I think that a 1970 Chevy El Camino would be a huge success.
The body lines, the popularity of the real 1:1 rides, all the Chevy muscle car fans out there.
So many positive reasons to actually do this casting.
For reference purposes just take a look at the '70 - '72 Chevy Chevelle casting.
And one caution if Learning Curve Brands decides to make this casting; please make them with a NORMAL hood. On occasion it would be fine to use a 454 SS Cowl induction hood but please don't put it on every variation and colour of the casting as it is produced.
Here is an image of an actual 1970 Chevy El Camino (black on right) that I quickly found for reference purposes:

Tom Z I hope that you read this particular portion of this topic and give it the due consideration that it deserves when it comes time to make a decision on such a casting.

I agree with you 100% about a '70 El Camino having a normal hood, and not the cowl induction hood on most castings if LC would deceide to make a '70 El Camino. Not many 1:1 El Caminos were made with cowl induction, although I'd like to have a 1:1 '70 El Camino with cowl induction.

Without the Cowl Induction there are any more options when it comes to making various castings.
Stripe delete, L-34, L-78, & L-89 engines instead of LS-5 or LS-6, SS and non-SS packages, small block engines, vinyl and non-vinyl roofs, factory mag wheels, factory rally wheels, and lots of other considerations.
Think about it: there could be a black coloured version with and without stripes or with and without the vinyl roof. One colour = four distinct variations.
Make mine black with vinyl roof, no stripes, and factory five spoke mag wheels.
Such a neat idea and oh so many possibilities!
Let's hope that today's dream about such a casting becomes tomorrow's reality.
Calling Tom Z. Are you out there?

Cheers. Cobra

I love El Caminos, especially the ones from the early 70's. Those ones looked the best in my opinion.

Great pics.

Thanks for the picture Wyatt. Perhaps it would be cool to see a BWF Zinger Camino. Love the boards in the back.
