thumbsup.gif nice choice Wyatt for all the VW Collectors out there. I know they are popular. I have 1 casting

IPB Image

This is very close to what I learned to drive on. My father had a crew cab model back in 1971. it was red, and had only a back door on the passenger side. But inside was quite roomy in the back. A far cry from the crew cabs of later years. It was fun to drive and fun to corner in as you were sitting on top of the wheel and it kinda felt like you were going over all the time. My Mom wasn't fond of that feeling and Dad traded it in on a Ford Galaxie Convertible in 1972. I hoped I could have the Galaxie for prom, but no way would he budge. Probably a good thing. He drove us to Prom and I have no idea how we got home. (anyway we arrived in style, it was of the few times he had the top down. I tried to get him to put on his uniform, Dad was in the Air Force, but another NO! I thought it would be cool to arrive in a chauffered driven car. But I digress. Back to the VW. The neat thing about this model was all 3 sides of the rear pickup area folded down and you basically had a flat bed. On the JL issue you see 3 little rectangular blocks at bed level along the sides, these are hinges. there were 2 at the back. the sides and the tailgate were pinned at the corners. What is missing on thee JL issue is there were 3 round rubber bumpers below the hinges so when you lowered the sides you didn't bang the painted services together and chip the paint. I remember in the fall of 1971 my dad shot a moose (sorry Lummox) and it darned near filled the whole pick up area. with his head hanging over the tailgate. At the butchers we pulled it off via the side of the truck.

Neat vehicle, nice casting, kinda rare, not many of the real thing were sold up here in Canada, see many down south?

Thanks for posting, and the trip down memory lane.

That white one must of fooled a lot of those WL hoarders and ebay scalpers! biggrin.gif

I have yet to find on of those Johnnies, lol.

I have the four V-dub's from the VWR5 series and a few other V-dub's from other manufacturers. Now I found something else to hunt for, lol.

You can add me to the growing list of non-JL VW truck owners!
I'd like to find one though. The OLDS I deal with are always out of stock.

JAMES ~ Not many of these in the states exept out west, they're big into old VWs.

Not much to say on this one except that I threw this one (or the Samba) into as many licensed properties as I could. VWs almost ALWAYS sell, or at least they did once, and this was a way to move some properties that I thought would be sure-fire peg-hangers.

Castings were in development as I arrived at PM/JL.

James, we have a fellow locally that has one of these vehicles.
It is beige coloured and he is a carpenter, and German.
I see it quite often in the summer.
Certainly an interesting vehicle.
I have seen it with the sides down.
I can recall only seeing one other real one.
The other one was a few years ago and it was the standard blue VW colour of the day that it came out of the factory. I haven't seen it for a few years.

This is my favourite version of the casting, strictly because of the paint colour:

And this is another Picture Of The Week that I enjoyed viewing.
Thanks Wyatt.

Cool thread and interesting casting.
I don't have one in my collection but did buy one from the Bay that I gave to a VW inthusiest. She's "Hippyish" and the serial # was appropriate for her.

Chevy made a Corvair truck similar to this in both p/u and van versions.
I would love to see those replicated as well.
Thanks for the great pic o' the week Wyatt.
