C'mon Mopar guys... no one is going to mention that the red pace car is THE '71 Indy 500 pace car that lost control and crashed in the stands set up for journalists covering the race? The driver I believe was the dealership owner who supplied the 383 cid non-R/T car. devil.gif

The '71 Dodge Challenger pace car may be the most infamous car ever to run at Indianapolis due to the tragic circumstances surrounding its day at the track. The car was driven by local car dealer Eldon Palmer. During practice laps, Palmer had used a cone to indicate where he should begin braking in order to bring the heavy car to a stop before the end of pit lane. When Palmer took to the track on race day, somebody removed the cone from pit row, and by the time Palmer realized it, it was too late to stop. The car ended up careening into the photographer's grandstand at the end of pit row, injuring twenty people.

Great pic Wyatt thumbsup.gif
I didn't know there was a wheel variation on the pace car. When the pace cars came out the Challenger was very hard to find for me.

Regarding the wheels... The wheels on the pace car are correct. The actual Pace car had Cragar S/S and Firestone Wide Ovals
Wyatt has some pretty interesting JLs there. There aren't all that many castings that I HAVE to have, but that Pace car is now one of them. thumbsup.gif

The pace car also has a hard wheel and "Real Wheels" version.

Wyatt, thank you for another outstanding picture.
This is another JL casting that I have always liked.
I also believe that it has been under-utilized.
I am not sure why.

I have three different editions of this casting.

IPB Image
This one does have a very shiny and glittery appearance, especially in bright sunlight.
Not shown in Wyatt's picture.

The license plate on the front reads "OLDGLORY".
There is no license plate on the back.

Lummox, this casting has Hoosier tires.

Images courtesy of JLCollector.com. Thanks Wyatt.

Cheers. Cobra
